A group of Black Men who used their experiences from life and their High School as building blocks to draft a movement whose national campaign is to encourage all people of color to define, reach, and excel beyond their own vision of success to become stakeholders to their community by providing Outreach, Mentorship, and Resources.
BMR has developed four mentorship programs meant to engage youth in different ways. These programs are broken into 2 groups individual and group mentorship.
Da’Village: A Members lead restorative storytelling circle group that discusses Current Event and Social and Culturally relevant topics that are taught with BMR Values and Lesson.
Open Da Book: A Member lead restorative storytelling circle that adds books to relate current events and culturally relevant topics to BMR Values and Lessons
Young Champions: A small group of current mentees hand selected to undergo regular mentoring and trainings to become youth advocates.
1 to 1: Our general mentorship program that matches 1 Mentor with 1 Mentee that most relatable and teaches best to the mentee learning style
This year’s BMR Young Champions shared with us how being a part of the program helped them learn to build power and advocate for themselves and their peers.
“’The youth is the hope of our future’” the youth is the hope of our future because older people tend to listen and learn more from the youth. That’s what I learned from black man rising”
“Black Man Risin helped me realize that there is a chance that people correct me from a place of love and not trying to be harmful over here”
Each BMR Mentorship program seeks to put youth on the first steps of their success. This is accomplished through the BMR Model: Authentic Engagement, CulturallyRelative Current Events, and Consistency to ensure the best experience for our youth. The time spent with BMR reflects a process of empowerment and strengthening as a man of color in this world. We strive to be what we lacked as we began our transition into adulthood. A supportive voice that says, “yes, you can and here is how you do it.”
